Bottled Water VS Fuel?
Today I made a regular stop at the local gas station to fill my vehicle with gas. $2.79 a gallon, its on its way back up. This generally seems to cause quite a bit of fuss amongst the public.I want to bring a little something to the table that most of us don't even think twice about, the cost of water. $1.39 for a 20 oz bottle at most convient stores or supermarkets. If you do the calculations it takes 6.4 bottles of water to equal 1 gallon.
What does this mean for you?
This means that you are paying approximatly $8.90 for 1 gallon of water! This is outragous and obsurd. Why are people ok with spending almost $9.00 for a gallon of water, but get upset about the 15 cents that fuel goes up? (Don't get me wrong, I hate spending money on gas as much as the next guy)
- I feel that we just don't calculate the cost of water when we buy it in a convienent little 20 oz. bottle.
- We think that the water is pure and healthy, its worth the extra buck. Let me expand on the last thought. Pure water. The water you are drinking out of the bottle that looks so refreshing is no more than filtered tap water. Many studies have proven that in a blind taste test most can't even tell the difference. A 1999 NRDC study found that bottled water was no purer or safer than most tap water.
In conclusion, packaging and shipping water consumes energy and contributes to global warming. Empty bottles add to litter and waste. Generally bottled water is no safer or healthier than the what flows from municipal water systems.
Are you willing to pay almost $9.00 for a gallon of bottled water? Thats about 3 times the cost of a gallon of gasoline. The choice is yours...
